I was once asked if I ever did abstract paintings? I replied " Yes I do, all the time... and from a certain distance my paintings look like this "....
Alpine Impressions
Together with Tanya and grandson Kit, visiting us from Cambridge University, we flew to Christchurch in the South Island. We were constantly on the move - planes, trains, buses and rental cars. I had little time to stop and make location sketches of the views. We saw Christchurch, Amberley, Greymouth, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, the Hokitika Gorge,Tekapo and Lake Pukaki.
As we crossed the island by rail the flatness of the river beds gave way to steep mountain slopes with few foothills. I was captivated by the spare geometry of this land. The straight edges, the minute and massive forms. I saw soft and sharp edges, passages of cool and warm, shapes near and far. These elements form the language of vision. The passing alpine vistas became vivid memories.
Later seventeen acrylic paintings were developed from small pastel sketches based on these memories. Thirteen of the images are shown in the main gallery..
