I was once asked if I ever did abstract paintings? I replied " Yes I do, all the time... and from a certain distance my paintings look like this "....
Books for sale - Sketches
Over the years David has created a series of high quality books using an online application BLURB. He has decided to make these available for purchase after many inquiries. Click the link or the book to go direct to the Blurb library and preview the books.
The following set of four publications are a compilation of sketchbooks that David has treasured and kept over many years. Unlike most of his work as an artist the books were never for sale. Thus they remained unseen by anybody but have become increasingly valuable to david as they contain his thoughts and images, some made sixty years ago, now lying stored in plan-chest drawers all precariously close to sea level. He has at least thirty of these original sketchbooks that contain much insight and are my views, impressions, and investigations of the way things looked to him.
They convey a sense of curiosity and inquiry and studied the way visual elements fitted together, such as a shoreline, or the architecture of trees, flowers, boats, and buildings. The text tells stories toward ends that were not known. They form an unpremeditated leading edge to creative events that were yet to occur. Often these original drawings became the basis for larger exhibition paintings in which david made compositional refinements and further considerations were added.
Some of these final works are included here. Regrettably due to the magnitude of many of the original books every single page cannot be reproduced so that unique quality of a sketchbook might be lost but not forgotten. Wherever text became indecipherable I felt compelled to typeset it in either a Didot or Zemke Handwritten face. Over the same time davids camera captured thousands of pictures that are not shown here. Nor does he portray the documentary films written and directed or the development of sculptures and houses built.
There are also dozens of other albums and books I have self-published. One about a yacht in Antarctica, another about cats I have known, and dogs and their owners. He describes a house designed and built on an island in B.C, another about the people who lived on that island. A car rally, a Northland family farm, a steam tug, a shipwreck and, Puhoi Kauri trees.
