NOW AND THEN    2009

In many places in the world I have made careful studies in graphite, pastel and watercolour that might later be useful reference for studio paintings. A selection of those drawings that translate well into a theme of ‘now and then’ become the foundation for this exhibition.
With practice, visual memories of locations endure as impressions of light, form, and space. These are the necessary elements of composition from which I select new relationships in a final work.
There are a number of painterly devices whereby an illusion of luminosity can be created. That this illusion can be rendered so persuasively continues to mystify me.
